Why did they ruin us

She was sitting on the road, bruised, burnt and desolate. She didn't understand, she was a good woman, she prayed everyday to her god, even when her husband died leaving two small kids behind, she didn't blame the god. She decided to fight and fight she did. And today when she thought all her hard work of a lifetime was coming to a fruition, all was lost, in a matter of minutes, she didn't even have time to react.

She didn't know what caused some angry young man to storm into her small hotel, some of them even used to come there for tea and occasional kulcha. But the eyes she encountered today wasn't the eyes of the youths she called 'beta'  affectionately. They were cold and there was hate in them, though why would anyone hate her was beyond her comprehension.

She remembered how happy she was in the morning, the family has agreed to the alliance, there were times in the past when she thought she'd never be able to marry her daughter, her son joined the army so that they could together afford the marriage ot her sister, she had calculated if she'll sell the shop, she'll have enough money for marriage. Now my son in earning, I don't need to work anymore, a lifetime of hardwork had taken the toll, she almost allowed herself to believe that it's the end of her misery.

But what followed in the last hour has shattered her dream, she couldn't still believe it, the neighbour who had pulled her from fire amid her almost feverish attempts to douse the fire had told her some people wanted reservation so thier kids could go to same school where intelligent Kids went and do the same jobs which hardworking and dedicated people did. She didn't know much about all that, her stoney eyes were fixated at the smoke rising her shop, the one chance to redeem herself, she could see the disappointment in her daughter's eyes. She'd understand, she knew and yet she didn't understand what she did to deserve all that.

Someone gave her the phone, her son was on line, he was worried he asked if she was ok and she said yes, he kept consoling her, he said he'll get didi married, she listened but couldn't bear to say anything.

Finally she asked - why did they burn our shop beta, what did they achieve by ruining our life, why couldn't they have used the same energy to better their life like I did, like you did, why aren't they like us beta, why???... her voice broke as she broke into hysterical sobs.
The son was thinking the same thing, why reservation is so important that it comes from ruining someone else's life, he knew thier life would never be the same, as he pondered, more cities burned, more life were ruined and more moms cried, hysterically and without hope
